This combination makes whey protein a favorite among athletes and fitness enthusiasts who want to support muscle building and recovery.

Within the whey family, there are subtypes to consider. Whey concentrate is the most affordable choice, containing 70%–80% protein. The remaining percentage includes carbs and fat, which might nudge up the calorie count. This isn’t a deal-breaker for most, but if you’re on a strict calorie plan, it’s something to be aware of. Whey isolate offers more than 90% protein, which translates to lower calories and lactose content, making it ideal if you have sensitivities to lactose. However, the extensive processing makes it more expensive than concentrate. Whey hydrolysate absorbs the fastest, and it’s generally well tolerated. Studies show that it might even be more effective for muscle protein synthesis than traditional whey protein. However, it’s the most expensive and least common option. 

Casein Protein

Casein, another protein powerhouse from cow’s milk, is a favorite among bodybuilders for a specific reason: slow digestion. Unlike whey protein, casein curdles in the stomach, creating a slow-release reservoir of amino acids. It delivers a prolonged dose of amino acids throughout the night, a critical window for muscle recovery and growth. Soy Protein Isolate

Soy protein isolate is a highly concentrated plant-based protein derived from soybeans. Packing a punch with at least 90% protein by weight, it’s virtually carb-free and fat-free. This isolate is produced through a refining process that separates the protein from other soybean components like fiber and carbohydrates. While this results in a more processed product compared with whole soy foods like tofu or edamame, it offers distinct advantages. 

Soy isolate is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids your body needs, making it a viable source of protein for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone looking for plant-based alternatives. Its minimal fat and carb content makes it a great choice for anyone watching their calorie intake or following a low-carb diet. The downside is that 90% of soybean crops are genetically modified to be herbicide-tolerant, which can lead to increased pesticide use. It also contains phytoestrogens that may aggravate existing hormonal issues. 

Pea Protein

Derived from yellow split peas, pea protein is a plant-based protein option gaining popularity.  Through a refining process, pea protein is extracted and available in three forms: flour, concentrate, and isolate.

One of pea protein’s key benefits is its digestibility. Measured by a system called PDCAAS, pea protein scores high (between 0.78 and 0.91, depending on the product), making it easier for your body to absorb its nutrients compared with other plant proteins. While still slightly lower than animal proteins like whey, pea protein efficiently delivers essential amino acids (EAAs) for muscle function.

Studies even suggest that pea protein supplementation might be effective for muscle growth.  One particular study showed participants who consumed pea protein experienced a greater increase in muscle thickness compared with those taking a placebo.

This high digestibility and complete amino acid profile, including branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) like leucine, isoleucine, and valine, contribute to pea protein’s effectiveness in muscle building and recovery – a claim supported by multiple clinical trials. It is, however, lower in some EAAs (like leucine) than whey. 

So, for those seeking a plant-based protein source to support their fitness goals, pea protein is a compelling option to consider.
